On the Border: Using Trims for Big Impact

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

While we don't espouse the "trendy" as a general rule, we do love spotting new style details! We have been following some very fun border treatments on walls, crown moldings, drapery, and wainscoting. Here's a little round up of some that we find inspiring! We are seeing this detail executed with ribbon, wood moldings, paint and even wallpaper borders (not your 80's mauve duck borders!) Trims like these add maximum style with minimum effort.

We have used this beading detail on some fun frames for art lately. You can DIY the look on a frame by ordering these half wood balls from Amazon and gluing them to a flat wood frame, then painting. As a wainscoting detail they add a charm factor perfect for kitchens, kids' rooms or a powder bath.

Master seamstress Lynn Chalk lined up a punchy ribbon trim on her color-blocked drapery and the wall, matching the lovely lavender paint color to the fabric.

Susie Atkinson, founder of her eponymous British homewares brand, has launched a collection of wallpaper borders which consists of colorful, patterned adhesive strips that can transform the whole look and feel of a room. The collection features four patterns (two stripes, a check, and a floral), all in multiple colorways, starting at $83 a roll.

Patterns from Mulberry (plaid wallpaper) and Pierre Frey (floral canopy bed fabric) coalesce beautifully in Avrea & Company’s upstairs bedroom for the Dallas Kip's Bay Showhouse.

With a coat of blue paint (Benjamin Moore Bespoke) and some black grosgrain ribbon, Megan Pflug Designs brought some classical details to this Tribeca abode.

In this room from Shelley Johnstone Design for the Dallas Kip's Bay Showhouse, the walls are covered in a Philip Jeffries ivory grasscloth, and a Samuel & Sons Greek Key decorates the trim and baseboards.

British brand Ottoline introduced a scallop wallpaper border trim in 10 delicious colors and we cannot pick a favorite.

Wallpaper is Lulie Wallace, paint color is Benjamin Moore Opaline, plaid fabric is Schumacher. Our very own TATE studio design for a sweet baby girl's nursery.
